1928
WESTERN VETERINARY CONFERENCE (WVC) originated in 1928 in Logan, Utah, as the “Intermountain Livestock Sanitary Association.” In keeping with the focus of the practitioner-founders, the meetings in the early years were held at the Ogden Livestock Show.
1938
The Association moved to Salt Lake City.
1947
The name was revised to the “Intermountain Veterinary Medical Association” to reflect the many changes occurring in the profession.
1963
The meeting moved to the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas to allow for greater accessibility for the growing veterinary population in the Western and Southwestern United States. With the exception of a one-year cancellation because of a hotel fire, the conference met annually since and emphasized diversity and quality presentations for practicing veterinarians in all species areas.
1965
The name Western States Veterinary Conference, sponsored by the Intermountain Veterinary Medical Association, was adopted.
1970
In response to continuous needs for more meeting and exhibit space, the Conference moved to the Sahara Hotel.
1974
The Western Veterinary Conference moved again to the Las Vegas Hilton.
1985
The term “states” and reference to “Intermountain Veterinary Medical Association” were discontinued, and the association was renamed the “Western Veterinary Conference.”
1987
The association incorporated as a
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Nevada.
1988
The Riviera Hotel provided additional meeting space from 1988 to 2000.
2001
The meeting moved to the MGM Grand Conference Center.
2003
The Conference moved to Mandalay Bay Convention Center to accommodate more meetings and exhibitors.
2004
Western Veterinary Conference Silent Auction Gallery and Gift Clinic were started.
2005
Electronic voting for board of directors was introduced.The international reception was provided to hundreds of international attendees for the first time.The Conference Call newspaper was developed and delivered Monday through Wednesday at the Conference.
2006
The 78th Annual Western Veterinary Conference attendance exceeded 14,000.
WVC-TV, WVC-Encore, and a key Sunday kick-off event were launched at this conference.
2007
Opportunities for technicians increased with the technician night event and technician. The auto tutorial library went digital. Western Veterinary Conference Continuing Educator of the Year was implemented via electronic voting by WVC attendees.
2008
The 80th Annual Conference was held on February 17-21 at Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
2009
The Oquendo Center for Clinical Education opens in Las Vegas. |
