About This Course

This two-day course will provide intensive lecture, live and cadaver wet lab experience of a wide array of medicine, surgery, commonly performed techniques and procedures in rabbits. 

The course will cover aspects of how to set up your practice, rabbit anatomy, husbandry, handling, clinical techniques, common diseases, diagnostic imaging, therapeutics, anesthesia, medicine and surgery, among other important topics. 

Morning lectures will be followed by hands-on wet lab with tips and tricks thrown in from the highly experienced course instructors. In the afternoons individual assistance from instructors will be available throughout the labs to help participants optimize their skills.

The course is aimed at general practice or university veterinarians with a keen interest in starting a rabbit medicine service or wishing to expand their capabilities.

Learning Objectives

  1. Develop an understanding of the principles of rabbit medicine, including how to incorporate it into your practice
  2. Know how to properly restrain, examine, and hospitalize the rabbit patient
  3. Know how to obtain and interpret diagnostic samples and imaging
  4. Develop a detailed understanding and confidence in rabbit anesthesia and analgesia, including endotracheal intubation
  5. Know how to recognize and treat common diseases, including GI syndrome, dental disease, and E. cuniculi
  6. Develop the ability and confidence to perform teeth trimming and incisor extraction, including stomatoscopy
  7. Know how to recognize and manage emergencies in rabbits, including liver lobe torsion
  8. Develop a detailed understanding of the principles of surgery in rabbits
  9. Develop the ability to perform orchiectomy and ovariohysterectomy in rabbits and understand important surgical principles to optimize outcomes and avoid complications
