Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to perform EKG evaluations and echocardiograms on dogs and cats.
  2. Participants will learn basic soft tissue surgery and tissue handling skills and perform routine surgeries such as splenectomies, cystotomies and gastropexies as well as practice intestinal surgical practices including enterotomies, end-to-end and side-to-side anastomoses and gastrotomy techniques.
  3. Participants will understand who they should reach out to for financial planning and how to build and purchase a practice.
  4. Participants will gain tips on personal finance and methods to help them better understand the short- and long-term effects of both personal and business financial decisions

Who Should Attend

The Clinical Skills Training course is a newly developed program to meet the needs of veterinarians who wish to gain additional training, experience and confidence in certain areas of practice. The hands-on course will rotate small groups through three practice areas, in an intimate learning environment.

Auscultation and Heart Sound Interpretation: Lecture and Lab
This lecture and laboratory will help illustrate how to differentiate different types of heart murmurs and help with diagnosis and next steps to determine how to identify and further characterize heart murmurs in dogs.


  • Review of the salient features of heart sounds and pathophysiology of murmurs
  • To improve the skill of cardiac auscultation

ECG didactic seminar and Lab
A systematic approach is required for an accurate rhythm diagnosis. Numerous ECG tracings from normal and abnormal dogs and cats will be examined. Each case presents the opportunity to review the principles and practices of ECG interpretation including calculating heart rate, normal and abnormal morphology, how to calculate the mean electrical axis (MEA) and distinction of the differentiation between supraventricular and ventricular rhythms.  At the conclusion, of the laboratory participants will be able to critically evaluate and ECG and help link the ECG with specific cardiac abnormalities.  Course emphasis will be on the more common ECG abnormalities found in small animal emergency and internal medicine   

Dyspnea in the cat: Why is this cat huffing and puffing?
This will be a one-hour seminar via PowerPoint and with optional interactive clicker questions via poll everywhere that will discuss how to diagnose a dyspneic cat and the methods to determine if the clinical signs are respiratory or cardiac.

Diagnosing syncope and how to manage these cases
This will be a one-hour seminar with videos to show how to deal with animals in syncope.  From diagnosis to therapy and prognosis, time will be spent with participants to make sure that there is not just understanding of the disease and diagnostic practice, but you will walk away with the knowledge of the next steps for managing these cases.



This course will be taught exclusively within the wet lab with both demonstrations and hands on experience to make sure during the 6-hour laboratory you gain the clinical skills to perform soft tissue surgical procedures that are instantly applicable to your practice. Gain confidence and experience with common soft tissue procedures including cystotomy, splenectomy and gastropexies as well as mass removal and biopsy techniques.  A portion of the lab will also be dedicated to gastrointestinal procedures including gastrotomies, enterotomies, intestinal biopsies and intestinal resection and anastomosis.  You will have personal attention and guidance so if there are other procedures you would like to work on, time can be spent to customize the experience to make sure you get the most out of the time in the lab.

Tues-Wed, November 6 & 7

Day 2 & Day 3
Students will be divided into two groups and will spend a full day in the disciplines of Cardiology and Soft Tissue Surgery. The meeting will close with a roundtable discussion moderated by Dr. Pease or Dr. Hilton. This session will allow attendees to ask questions and plan their course for becoming a “stand-out” veterinarian.
